Coming this Summer to Riga, Latvia, scores of sailing ships from 35 countries will compete at the Tall Ships Races 2013 visiting the city for the first time in 10 years. The massive tall ship regatta is expected to deliver hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city, and 99 of the world’s most fabulous sailing vessels are slated to compete July 25 – 28.

A brand new art center has opened in Daugavpils, Latvia. The multi-million euro Mark Rothko Art Center, a state-of-the-art venue dedicated to the local artist, is a welcome new attraction for visitors to the country.

A travel alert from Latvia, over 500 people are left stranded in the Gulf Of Riga on two ice flows that separated from the mainland off the Vakarbulli coast. Emergency crews are now attempting to rescue those marooned on the ice.

According to news last week from airBaltic, the Latvian airline operated 3,235 flights in December of 2012, a number down some 8% over the previous year’s totals.

Last week airBaltic announced having ordered 10 new Bombardier CS300 airliners. The airline, based in Riga, Latvia, also purchased the rights to an additional 10 planes, according to their news.

As of next week, airBaltic, Latvia’s national airline, will be adding direct flights from Riga to Chisinau, Moldova, to its previously announced winter flight schedule.
