- The Chania Tourist Police Department conducted coordinated sweeps across major beach areas to combat illicit trade and public health violations during the peak summer season.
- Two foreign nationals were arrested for operating as beach masseurs without health certificates and failing to meet basic sanitary standards for public health.
- An additional two individuals—one local and one foreign national—were detained and fined for selling baked goods and crafts to beachgoers without a permit.
- Police confirmed that these highly visible beach patrols will continue across Crete throughout the summer to enforce tourism legislation.
On June 11, the Chania Tourist Police Department executed a series of targeted inspections across popular coastal areas within the Municipality of Chania. Organized as part of a broader summer campaign by the Chania Police Directorate, the crackdown focused on eliminating unauthorized commercial activity and enforcing strict public health and hygiene standards in high-traffic tourist zones.
The operations resulted in the arrest of four individuals. Among them, two foreign nationals were caught providing massage services directly on the sand to sunbathers. According to law enforcement, the individuals lacked the mandatory state-issued health certificates and violated fundamental hygiene protocols required to guarantee public safety.
Unlicensed Vending Patrolled Near the Shoreline
In addition to the illegal wellness services, the Tourist Police targeted the unregulated sale of goods to beachgoers and pedestrians.
Officers detained a Greek citizen and a foreign national who were actively peddling items along the waterfront. The merchandise included:
- Unlicensed baked goods and pastries
- Handcrafted items and artisan goods
Because neither vendor possessed the legal permits required by competent municipal or regional authorities to conduct mobile trade, officers confiscated the items and issued the standard administrative fines prescribed under Greek commercial law.
The Chania Police Directorate emphasized that these coordinated enforcement actions are designed to boost the visible police presence in key resort areas, reinforce a sense of security among visitors and residents, and ensure strict compliance with national tourism legislation.
The General Regional Police Directorate of Crete has confirmed that similar target checks will be maintained across the entire island’s jurisdiction for the duration of the holiday season.
