- Deputy Minister Stefanos Gikas emphasized the ecological, cultural, and economic role of geoparks
After years of preparation, scientific documentation, and collaboration between local authorities and academic partners, the island of Nisyros has officially entered the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. This international recognition places Nisyros on the map not only as a volcanic wonder but also as a cultural and educational destination.
The candidacy was supported financially and institutionally by the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy, which funded the creation of the “Digital Guide of the Nisyros Geopark.” The tool presents the island’s geological and cultural features in an accessible way, strengthening the application and ensuring global visibility.
Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Stefanos Gikas praised the achievement:
“I am very satisfied, as through the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy, from the very beginning, we supported the creation of the Digital Guide of the Nisyros Geopark—an essential tool for showcasing the island’s unique geological characteristics. In this way, we strengthened the Greek candidacy.”

He further underlined the importance of collaboration:
“Our partnership with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Professor Paraskevi Nomikou, who coordinated and presented the Digital Guide, as well as with the active Mayor of Nisyros, Mr. Christofis Koronaios, was exemplary. It highlighted the comparative advantages of Nisyros as a destination of exceptional geological and cultural value.”
Recalling earlier discussions, Gikas added:
“A few months ago, together with the Secretary General, Manolis Koutoulakis, we welcomed the Mayor of Nisyros and Professor Nomikou’s team at the Ministry, where the Digital Guide was presented. We said then that this effort combines scientific documentation, innovation, and a true strengthening of island identity. I am glad it has now succeeded.”
Finally, he summed up the broader significance:
“Geoparks are not only important ecological and geological sites, but also living cells of economic and social development for our islands.”
