Old Town Square in Prague allows visitors to experience a true taste of the area’s past. Guests will find the destination conveniently located between the Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square. Old Town Square, or Staromestske, dates back 600 or 700 years, originating in the late 12th century when locals used the area as the central marketplace of the city. Since then, the market has grown into a bustling commerce center filled with nearby restaurants, shops, cafés, churches, and other stops.

While the search for a sidewalk café or shop might draw visitors into the square, the rich history and architecture of the place are sure to draw them in even deeper. The dramatic history behind Prague is exemplified by this place. Ancient churches and buildings feature Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque architecture styles, while the Statues and monuments commemorate historical events. Some must-see sights on a walking tour of the square include the following places:
- The Old Town Hall Tower and Astronomical Clock
- The Church of Our Lady before Tyn (above)
- The St. Nicholas Church (bottom)
In the center of the square, guests will find Jan Hus statue, which was erected on July 6, 1915 in commemoration of 500 years following this reformer’s death. He was burned at the stake for his beliefs in Constance.

The square is also home to numerous celebrations, including New Year’s celebration, a Christmas marketplace, Easter market, and protests throughout the year.
