Bulgaria’s rail system gets a boost with Škoda Group’s new 25 state-of-the-art electric trains, featuring modern amenities and cutting-edge technology.
This move was recently confirmed by Minister of Transport and Communications Krasimira Stoyanova, who announced an additional order of five trains complementing an existing contract for 20. This pioneering deal is the first of its kind funded under the Transport Connectivity Program 2021-2027.
Škoda’s commitment to delivering modern trains aims to replace outdated models with innovative solutions. The new units will feature over 300 seats, air-conditioned interiors, ergonomic seating, and equipped with onboard Wi-Fi. A key highlight is the barrier-free design, which ensures accessibility for all passengers, including low-floor boarding and spacious doors.
Highlights of Škoda’s Train Technology
- Performs at top speeds of up to 160 km/h.
- Operates on 25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification lines.
- Offers advanced safety with exterior and interior camera systems.
- Provides multifunctional areas for passengers with disabilities, prams, or bicycles.
“We want to ensure the timeliness of delivery, unlike past delays,” Stoyanova mentioned optimistically. This initiative underscores a pivotal transition in Bulgaria’s railway infrastructure, focusing on safety and reliability. Negotiations with the European Commission led to funding via the “Transport Connectivity” Program, signifying a commitment to seamless rail transport.
Škoda Group’s European Expansion
Petr Novotný of Škoda Group expressed, “Winning this order confirms that our products can compete internationally and at the same time strengthens our position in the modernisation of European rail transport.” This aligns with the group’s strategy, with nearly 400 electric units already deployed across Europe, attesting to their expertise.
Bulgaria is gearing up for its first railway highway, which is projected to be completed by 2027. The ongoing efforts in “Plovdiv—Burgas” phase 2, “Voluyak—Dragoman” phase 2, and the “Ruse—Veliko Tarnovo” highway are part of a broader vision to enhance transport infrastructure through robust investment and planning. As of now, the Operational Program “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” 2014-2020 is almost entirely realized (99.4%) with efficient financial execution.
