- KTEL Santorini resumes bus service to Kamari after approval by the regional transport authority
- Route runs from the Avis area to the Kamara area, starting September 10, 2025
- Decision followed the municipality’s traffic study and safety upgrades, including pedestrian paths and signage
- Service expected to benefit both residents and tourists in one of the island’s busiest resorts
The Municipality of Thira has confirmed the reactivation of the KTEL bus line serving Kamari, one of Santorini’s most visited coastal settlements. According to the announcement, routes will officially restart on the morning of September 10, 2025, covering the stretch from the Avis area through to Kamara.
This decision follows sustained efforts by the municipality and approval from the South Aegean Region’s Transport Department. For years, the absence of a reliable bus line in Kamari created difficulties for both locals and seasonal workers, as well as visitors who relied on taxis, rental cars, or long walks along busy roads.
Safety Improvements Paved the Way
The route’s reinstatement became possible after the municipality completed a traffic study, published in the Government Gazette (FEK 3159/4.6.2024). The study introduced measures to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety, including designated walking routes and updated road signage. These changes, combined with coordination between local and regional authorities, allowed for the green light from the Transport Department to ensure safe bus passage through the settlement.
Deputy Mayor representatives emphasized that the upgrades were necessary for “uninterrupted and secure transit” in a village where summer traffic can be heavy.
The Importance of the Kamari Bus Route
The return of the bus line carries more than symbolic weight. Kamari is one of Santorini’s most important beach resorts, stretching along the island’s east coast under the slopes of Mesa Vouno. Known for its long black-sand beach, its open-air cinema, and its proximity to the archaeological site of Ancient Thera, Kamari attracts both international tourists and locals seeking weekend escapes.
For permanent residents, many of whom work in hospitality or service industries, a reliable public bus means easier commutes and reduced dependence on private cars. For tourists, it offers a cost-effective alternative to taxis and helps ease congestion on narrow village roads.
The reintroduction of this bus line also reflects broader efforts to strengthen public transport across Santorini, a perennial challenge on an island that balances local needs with the demands of millions of visitors each year.
Looking Ahead
With buses set to run again from September 10, Kamari will rejoin the primary public transport grid of Santorini. The municipality expressed its satisfaction at reaching this point, noting that the project took “persistent effort” but ultimately delivers a practical benefit for the community.
For residents, it is a welcome return to normalcy. For visitors, it is one more way to explore Santorini beyond the crowded caldera.
