Dubovac’s Nobility Fair (Dubovac Sajam vlastelinstva) is one of the most interesting Middle Ages events in Croatia, despite its young tradition. Held for the first time in 2005, and aimed mainly at local communities, the fair is now attracting thousands of tourists from all over the country and international guests.
Centered around the famous Dubovac Castle in Karlovac, and the surrounding Dubovac promenade and park on the hill above the river Kupa, the fair is a fun way to explore the history of the area. Since 2005, the small town returns to the Middle Ages to celebrate the long and interesting history that shaped the people and the culture of these lands, long before Karlovac was established. The fair takes two weeks, all filled with live entertainment, Renaissance dances, medieval cuisine, customs, crafts and folk games. The peak of the fair this year is 26 to 27 May, when visitors can take part in the medieval archery tournament, enjoy costume entertainment, laugh with the medieval court jesters, or see the knights jousting like they did way back when the castle was home to the powerful Karlovac generals and counts.
The fair is also an excellent opportunity to buy authentic crafts, and souvenirs, including pottery, jewelry and stained glass. This year, there will also guest performances by groups from across the picturesque Croatian landscape, with archers, knights, drummers, falconers, and more. There are special children activities, and history buffs can complete the tour with a visit at the local history museum inside the Dubovac Castle.
