- Completion of the Plakiotissa Dam marks a turning point in Crete’s water resource management.
- The dam began in 2007 and is now in its final stages under the current government.
- It will provide irrigation for nearly 30,000 stremmas, supporting farmers and the primary sector.
- Plans and studies for accompanying irrigation networks are complete.
- The dam holds up to 18 million cubic meters of water, reducing dependence on wells.
- The project helps secure water throughout the year, especially tackling summer droughts.
- Local and national officials stress improving private land productivity due to a stable water supply.
- All necessary environmental studies have been completed; more infrastructure works are scheduled for tender.
- The Region of Crete is committed to finishing small and large-scale projects to benefit local producers and the community.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the construction site of the Plakiotissa Dam in Mesara on Friday afternoon, expressing his satisfaction with the progress made during his term. Referring to the dam, he stated, “I am pleased that the project, which began in 2007, is being completed under our stewardship. We have secured funding to proceed with the tender process for the irrigation networks, enabling us to irrigate about 30,000 stremmas of productive Cretan land.”
The Plakiotissa Dam is now entering its first filling phase. The primary goal is to reliably supply water to approximately 30,000 stremmas of land, strengthening agriculture—the foundation of the region’s economy and employment. The Region of Crete has already prepared studies for irrigation networks.
The dam is an example of how focused work can resolve long-standing issues, as highlighted by the Prime Minister: “It’s truly regretful when works are left incomplete, after millions have been spent and farmers are left waiting for water. The Plakiotissa Dam shows how quickly we can address delays. We hope for timely rainfall to fill the reservoir soon. With a capacity of 18 million cubic meters, this dam will remove the need for wells or other alternative ways to water crops.”
Sustaining Agriculture and the Local Economy
Beyond its practical role, the Plakiotissa Dam shows a clear government commitment to advancing water management on Crete. The ability to capture and distribute water during the winter months prevents shortages in summer and shields local growers from drought’s effects. Officials believe the area will see a steep rise in productivity and opportunity.
During his visit to Mesara and a stop in Peza, Heraklion, the Prime Minister met with Mayor Manolis Kokosalis and residents, who welcomed him with local goods. This gesture reflects the community’s recognition of the dam’s significance for the region’s future. The Regional Governor underlined ongoing efforts: “We will continue every effort to progress future works, for the benefit of farmers, livestock breeders, and all who support the primary sector.”
The dam strengthens the local economy, ensuring a dependable water supply for residents and businesses. Ongoing collaboration between ministries and local authorities aims to address gaps and complete every unfinished infrastructure project. The coming years promise continued support and better resource management for Crete.
