Heraklion and Rethymno Brace for Rough Seas
With severe weather advancing toward Crete, the Port Authorities of Heraklion and Rethymno have moved to a heightened readiness. Personnel, patrol boats, land units — everything that floats or rolls — is now on standby, prepared to assist ships, small vessels, or anyone caught at sea should conditions turn dangerous.
The Heraklion Port Authority issued a direct appeal to boat owners: secure your vessels now. Strong mooring, extra lines, proper fenders — whatever it takes to keep boats safe before the storm reaches the island.
Warnings Extended to Fishermen and Sailing Groups
Rethymno’s Port Authority also contacted the local fishing associations, recreational fishing clubs, and the local sailing club, urging them to remain ready to assist in the event of a rescue or emergency. Summer might be long gone, but the maritime community is still expected to step up when needed.
Authorities underline the following precautionary measures:
- Fishing boats, leisure crafts, and small vessels should avoid all activity during the period of dangerous weather.
- Tugboats, rescue vessels, fishing fleets, and volunteer groups must remain fully prepared to provide immediate assistance.
- Local print and digital media are asked to broadcast warnings and safety instructions throughout the storm continuously.
- Heraklion’s Port Authority has already activated all personnel and available assets, ready to respond to any risk involving vessels, small craft, or human life.
Crete knows storms, but preparation makes the difference. Today, the ports stand ready.
