When people speak of Braşov, Romania and surrounding tourist attractions, they usually think of Rasnov and Bran Castle. As lovely as they are, another fortress in the area should now be on your list of places to visit. Rupea, located at 70 kilometers from Braşov, was restored and is already exceeding expectations in regards to number of tourists.
Three years ago, the local authorities received three million European EURO to use for the restoration of the Rupea Fortress. When the project was submitted, the local authorities estimated a number of 5,000 visitors in the first year, as Flavius Dumitrescu, mayor of Rupea explained in an article featured by Adevarul.ro. So far however, 45,000 people came to see Rupea fortress, nine times more than the the estimated number.
Rupea fortress was first mentioned in 1357. Nowadays, as a tourist site, it can be visited between 10.00 – 20.00. Ticket prices are also really affordable, with 10 lei for a ticket for an adult, 5 lei a ticket for a child and 8 lei per person in organized groups. Quality access roads lead you to the fortress, where you’ll find 110 parking spaces (of which 10 for buses). A tourist information center can be found here, and a special lighting system is used to ensure all of the fortress’ special details are highlighted.
