During the Chania City Council meeting of April 2, 2025, early developments were announced to create a Stray Pets Clinic and Shelter facility in Kampani Akrotiri. The large-scale project is one of the municipality’s activities to address the welfare of stray animals.
The innovative complex, spread over 107,396.35 square meters, will set a new standard in animal care. Members of the council were briefed on its features by the project’s appointed planners, whose work highlights efficiency and modernity throughout the proposal.
A Glimpse Into the Final Plan
With complete design approvals now secured and the project slated for tender, the clinic and shelter will include an impressive array of features:
- Administrative and Clinical Building: A shared space dedicated to administrative services and veterinary care.
- Comfortable Dog Shelters: Two accommodation structures, each capable of housing 48 dogs.
- Recreational and Event Area: A designated animal park equipped for exercise and community events.
- Visitor Seating: Covered seating areas designed for guests and animal enthusiasts.
The comprehensive plan will be funded by the Ministry of the Interior through the “Filodimos II” initiative, ensuring that all necessary resources are allocated for the facility’s successful completion.
From Planning to Reality
This quality-standard facility is designed to enhance the welfare of stray animals while instilling a sense of community involvement. Situated in a picturesque area of Chania, the shelter and clinic will not only provide essential services but also be a beacon of the city’s dedication to humane animal welfare.
As the project comes to a successful finish, Chania takes its last significant step in delivering care for the animal population and cementing the area’s role as an understanding and forward-thinking destination. Residents and tourists alike will soon witness Kampani being reshaped into a sanctuary that puts animals first.
