Agios Nikolaos will host a three-day event titled “The Art of Ceramics on the Wheel” at the town’s former courthouse (Eirinodikeio). From September 12 to 14, visitors will have the opportunity to watch professional potters at work and explore the craft of functional ceramics in all its stages.
The event is led by three established Cretan ceramists—Konstantinos Spyridis, Nikolaos Koulouras, and Panagiotis Koutzelas—who share decades of experience and a common dedication to utilitarian pottery. Together, they operate the workshop Cretan Spiral Pottery in the Havania area of Agios Nikolaos, where they produce daily-use ceramic objects and run specialized courses for students and enthusiasts.
Live Demonstrations and Exhibitions
Over three evenings, the artists will demonstrate techniques on both electric and traditional foot-powered pottery wheels, as well as hand-forming methods. Audiences will be able to follow the process step by step—from shaping the clay to finishing details—and gain insight into the rhythm and discipline of wheel-thrown ceramics.
Beyond the demonstrations, the event will feature a small photography exhibition from the Havania workshop and a presentation of selected ceramic works. Organizers emphasize that the display is not commercial in nature but purely educational and artistic.
Bringing Ceramics Closer to the Public
The goal of the initiative is to introduce the public to contemporary functional ceramics, highlighting its practical value as well as its cultural dimension. Visitors will be able to meet the artists, discuss tools and techniques, and engage directly with the philosophy behind their craft.
With free admission and evening hours (18:00–20:00), the event opens an accessible door into the world of Cretan ceramics, reaffirming Agios Nikolaos as not only a tourist destination but also a living hub of traditional and modern craftsmanship.
