St. Petersburg, Russia has won the coveted title of World’s Leading Cultural City Destination from World Travel Awards. The gala events held last Friday evening heralded the city’s cultural importance and potential for future tourism growth.
The event took place at the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi in Maldives, where hundreds of industry executives and decision makers gathered to honor travel’s best. Andrey Mushkarev, Chairman of the St Petersburg Committee for Tourism Development, had this to say:
“St Petersburg is now at the peak of its popularity. The city has won the most prestigious award in tourism, The northern capital of Russia hosts a large number of cultural and business events each year, and this is recognition of our growing significance in hospitality.”
Mushkarev went on to commend his colleagues whose work in promoting the city led to the prestigious honor. St Petersburg is famous for its Hermitage Museum and the Kirov Ballet, but the city’s rich history is everywhere one looks. A fascinating destination, the Venice of the North also has; Peter and Paul Fortress, the Winter Palace, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Mariinsky Theater and dozens more unique cultural and historic attractions.
Russia hospitality entities also took home other honors across several categories including: Russia’s Best Hotel Suite, which went to the Emperor Suite at the Taleon Imperial; Russia’s Leading Travel Agency, which went to Real Russia; among the many others. International winner were; Lufthansa, Zurich airport, and Titanic Belfast, which was name Europe’s best tourist attraction. Portugal also won in several categories
the Best Island Destination for Madeira.
The World Travel Awards were established back in 1993, in order to acknowledge and reward the excellence of the travel and hospitality industry.
