Shortly before 9:00 AM, a popwerful earthquake was detected in Arkalochori, alarming local residents.
- Magnitude: 3.6 on the Richter scale
- Epicentre: 4 km West North-West of Arkalochori
- Depth: 12.4 km
Within just a few minutes, a second and stronger earthquake hit Heraklion, followed closely by another tremor moments later.
- The second quake, registering 4.4 on the Richter scale, was centred 4 km from Arkalochori (about 14 km from the new airport in Kasteli).
- The focal depth was measured at 11.8 km.
- Earlier, an initial tremor of 3.6 magnitude was recorded at 08:57.
These successive quakes have underscored the region’s seismic activity, capturing attention and precautionary measures.
According to seismologist Gerassimos A. Papadopoulos, the fault that caused the 6.0 quake on 9/27/2021 is still active. It’s normal for it to produce smaller earthquakes like today’s once in a while.
