Cruises to the North pole aboard Atomflot vessels began back in 1990, with voyages aboard the nuclear icebreakers “Rossiya”, “Sovetskiy Soyuz”, and “Yamal”. After the commissioning of the nuclear-powered icebreaker “50 years of Victory” in 2007, the excursions have all been aboard this, the world’s largest nuclear powered icebreaker.
In the past such voyages have been popular with Chinese and Japanese tourists, Lenta.ru reports. Tourists on this unique cruise sail past the Franz Joseph and the famous bird colonies and rookeries of sea animals of the Arctic, and at the end point get the opportunity to dive into an ice hole in the Arctic Ocean.
Just last month Rosturizm officials said they intend to actively develop the Arctic as a tourism destination, with Murmansk as the main center of attraction of all the Arctic cruises.
