The Cretelia Festival 2019 coming up 16 to 22 September, will feature a roster of inspiring international DJs performing in the south of Crete Island. This year’s multi-site festival aims to transport festival-goers to the time of legendary artists.
Once the bastion of counter-cultural ‘hippy’ ideals in the 1960s, Matala still echoes the popular cultural figures of the time. On a given night at the famous beach, you might catch the songs of Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and Janis Joplin, who once took up residence in the legendary hippie caves. In the midst of this vibe, the Cretelia Festival 2019 aims to create an unforgettable musical and cultural experience.
The is a re-imagining of this legendary era. This year’s lineup includes; Ferry Ultra, DJ Frank Koopmann, DJ Motte, Paul Kestermann, DJ Wolf Kolster, and Mona Seebohm. According to the organizers, more performers are scheduled to be announced soon.
Who knows, festival-goers may run into hippies from back in “the day” since a few from the 60s era still live around Matala. Some say the spirit of Jim Morrison still walks Kommos Beach on the Mesara Gulf. Maybe you’ll catch the legendary Doors vocalist at a beach party there this year?
The festivities will spread to Komos Beach clubs, coastal chilling in this idyllic setting, and late-night parties to reignite your free spirit over the course of the festival’s duration. A few of the sites for the festival include; the “sleepy dragon” Bar in Agios Pavlos, the Tavern of Agios Giorgos at Agia Galini, and the Karibu Bar in Kalamaki, Kokkinos Pyrgos Beach, and Matala’s Red Beach.
