A man believed to be around 35 years old was found unconscious in the sea at Agioi Apostoloi in Chania on Saturday afternoon.
Swimmers noticed the man floating in the water and alerted the authorities. Coast Guard personnel responded to the scene, while an ambulance from the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAV) and police officers were also called to the beach.
The man was pulled from the water without signs of consciousness and handed over to EKAV rescuers.
He was taken immediately to Chania General Hospital, where he was admitted for medical care.
His identity has not been released, and there was no immediate information about how he came to be unconscious in the water.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Swimming alone can turn a routine dip into a dangerous situation if something goes wrong unexpectedly. Whenever possible, swim with someone else, stay within your abilities, and avoid entering the water if conditions are unsafe. If someone is in trouble, call 112 immediately.
