Germany’s Reisereporter recently published its list of the best Greek destinations for autumn travel. The criteria? Mild weather, fewer crowds, and a perfect blend of culture, nature, and sea.
The list is solid. But we have to address the elephant in the room: they ranked Crete at number 6.
We’ll take it. Mostly because ranking Crete is like ranking a continent. It is simply too massive, too diverse, and too powerful to be neatly boxed into a “top 5” seasonal fling. While the rest of Greece winds down, Crete is just hitting its autumn stride.
Crete’s Autumn Supremacy
Let’s focus on why Crete is the ultimate off-season travel hack. The German report correctly notes that the island boasts roughly 300 days of sunshine per year.
While northern destinations start packing away their swimwear, Crete in October and November still sees temperatures hovering comfortably around 20°C. The sea remains warm enough for a dip, the hiking trails in the White Mountains are finally cool enough to tackle without heatstroke, and the archaeological sites are blissfully empty.
The report also gave a specific, well-deserved shoutout to Chania, highlighting it as one of the most beautiful cities in the country. In autumn, Chania’s Venetian harbor is moody, romantic, and entirely free of the shoulder-to-shoulder summer crush. You can actually hear the waves.
The Rest of the Pack
For those who want to explore beyond Crete, the German list offers some excellent, albeit smaller-scale, alternatives:
- The Northern Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skyros): Ranked #1 for their lush, green landscapes and lack of overdevelopment. The sea stays above 20°C in October, making it a quiet, nature-focused retreat. BV2.
- Monemvasia: The medieval rock fortress of the Peloponnese takes #2. It has a year-round mild climate (reaching 15°C even in winter) and offers panoramic, cinematic views without the summer tour buses.
- Thessaloniki: Greece’s vibrant second city claims #3. Autumn is the perfect time to explore the White Tower, the waterfront, and the city’s legendary food scene without the stifling summer heat.
- Pelion: The mythical “Mount Olympus of autumn” lands at #4. It’s the ultimate hybrid destination: hike through forests turning brilliant yellow and orange in the morning, and swim in quiet, secluded coves in the afternoon.
- Athens: The capital rounds out the top 5. Finally, a time of year when you can walk up to the Acropolis without melting into a puddle. The report also rightly notes that Athens is highly budget-friendly in the off-season, with plenty of free cultural activities.
Every destination on this list has its merits. But if you want the ultimate autumn package, where you can hike a mountain, swim in the sea, and eat dinner in a world-class historic city all in the same 24-hour period, there is only one logical choice: Crete.
Crete doesn’t need to be number one on a German list to be number one in reality. The crowds are gone, the prices drop, and the island finally gets to breathe.
