- A 72-year-old French female tourist lost her life after being struck by a passing vehicle while crossing the BOAK at Stavromenos in Rethymno on Monday night.
- The fatality marks the second pedestrian death on Crete’s northern highway within a 24-hour window, following the death of a 32-year-old Ukrainian man in Chania the previous night.
- Investigators note that in both instances, motorists had virtually no time to brake or swerve as pedestrians stepped onto the unlit, high-speed roadway.
- While a fully modernized VOAK with protective barriers and lighting is planned for the future, safety experts warn that years of construction delays leave immediate, life-threatening hazards unaddressed.
A 72-year-old French national is among two pedestrians killed in chillingly similar circumstances over a 24-hour span on Crete’s notoriously dangerous Northern Road Axis (VOAK).
The tragedy unfolded late Monday evening in Rethymno’s Stavromenos area. The 72-year-old French visitor was attempting to cross the busy highway when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The force of the impact proved fatal, plunging local emergency responders and witnesses into shock.
The incident comes exactly one day after a 32-year-old Ukrainian man lost his life under near-identical conditions in Chania. In both cases, preliminary police findings indicate drivers had no reaction time because of poor lighting, high speeds, and the lack of designated pedestrian crossings along unbarriered stretches of the highway.
The back-to-back fatalities have reignited fierce debates about roadway safety for locals and international travelers alike. While extensive modernization projects are underway to deliver a fully redesigned BOAK complete with central barriers, overpasses, and proper illumination, completion remains years away.
In the meantime, advocates are pressing for immediate interim measures, such as temporary speed reductions, enhanced lighting at high-risk junctions, and mobile speed cameras, to prevent further bloodshed on the island’s primary artery.
