Ferry services across Greece are expected to face cancellations and delays on Friday as three seafarers’ unions stage a 24-hour strike over pay, working conditions and crew safety.
- The strike will affect major ports including Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patra, Igoumenitsa and Elefsina.
- The Rio-Antirrio crossing will also be affected.
- Ferry departures scheduled during the strike are expected to be canceled or delayed.
- Travelers should check directly with their ferry operator before heading to the port.
Friday Is Not a Good Day to Improvise at the Port
Three seafarers’ unions have called a 24-hour strike for Friday, putting ferry services at several major Greek ports at risk of disruption.
The unions are demanding improved collective labor agreements, a 12% pay increase, shorter working hours and stronger safety protections for crews, particularly those operating in conflict zones.
For travelers, the immediate issue is considerably less philosophical: your ferry may not leave.
Passengers traveling through Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patra, Igoumenitsa, or Elefsina should check their sailing status with the ferry company before traveling to the port.
The Rio-Antirrio crossing is also expected to be affected.
International Protest Adds Another Layer
The Greek strike coincides with coordinated international action by port workers protesting the use of ports to transport military equipment and personnel to war zones.
Greece’s federation of port employees, OMYLE, has separately called a three-hour work stoppage from 10 am to 1 pm, citing concerns including automation, labor rights and collective bargaining.
The Piraeus Labor Center has also called a separate 24-hour strike as part of the international mobilization, which organizers say involves workers at more than 100 ports worldwide.
A protest rally is scheduled for 10 am Friday at Municipal Theater Square in Piraeus.
For tourists, however, the practical takeaway is simple: if you have a ferry booked for Friday, don’t assume the timetable is still valid.
Check your operator before leaving for the port and allow extra time for any disruption.
