The beaches of western Crete are once again collecting international applause. In the latest global rankings by Tripadvisor, three shores from Kissamos made it into the world’s top twenty beaches for 2026 — not as newcomers, but as seasoned favorites.
Among the twenty coastlines voted by travelers as the most remarkable on the planet, western Crete holds its ground with:
- Elafonissi – 2nd place worldwide
- Balos Lagoon – 3rd place worldwide
- Falasarna – 11th place worldwide
Also appearing on the list is Palaiokastritsa, which secured 14th place and represents another strong Greek presence.
At the very top of the 2026 ranking sits Isla Pasion in Mexico, taking first place this year.
A Familiar Pattern of Excellence
This is not the first time the Municipality of Kissamos has enjoyed international recognition. Elafonissi’s blush-toned sands, Balos’ lagoon framed by Gramvousa’s wild silhouette, and Falasarna’s vast golden sweep have long been postcard material — but more importantly, they continue to resonate with real travelers.
What makes this distinction notable is consistency. These beaches are not one-season wonders. They return, year after year, to global lists because visitors keep voting for them.
- Elafonissi remains beloved for its shallow turquoise waters and pink-tinged sand.
- Balos captivates with its dramatic lagoon setting and shifting hues of blue.
- Falasarna offers space, wind, and sunsets that feel cinematic rather than curated.
For Kissamos, this repeated international visibility reinforces its position as a destination where natural beauty remains the headline act.
Beyond the Rankings
Global lists are flattering. They generate clicks, bookings, and social media posts. But they also underscore something simpler: western Crete continues to deliver exactly what travelers seek — clean waters, striking landscapes, and beaches that feel both iconic and elemental.
Recognition from TripAdvisor’s global audience places Kissamos once more among the elite coastal destinations of the world. Whether that translates into another record tourism year remains to be seen. What is certain is that Elafonissi, Balos, and Falasarna are not fading from the conversation anytime soon.
