Yes, you read this title correctly. In mobile connectivity news today, leading edge Wi-Fi provider Boingo has penned a deal with industry leader Gogo, to provide digital services above 10,000 feet.
Like most readers, scanning the first couple of lines of this press release made me wonder if some time off might be the best option. It’s not every day one is presented with so many brands that make more sound than sense. At least this is true for the non-mobile techies among us. But, Boingo Wireless, Inc. is a Wi Fi company, and a good one at that. So, tag teaming with the world’s leading “in flight” connectivity company is serious news – especially for the respective customers of the two companies. Luis Serrano, Senior VP of Business and Corporate Development for Boingo Wireless, added this:
“The Boingo Roaming Network now extends six miles above the Earth thanks to the expansive fleet of Gogo equipped airplanes. Gogo’s inflight network is a key addition to our roaming portfolio, especially since inflight access is one of the most requested service enhancements we receive through our customer feedback channels.”
Service already available for Boingo customers via the Gogo site here. By using the latest Boingo® Wi-Finder app, those wanting to connect in this manner, will be all set – just choose Boingo as the provider, then log in with their existing Boingo username and password.
This video from Gogo explains a bit about how their service works.

Well, it may be a while. For the future (and this is just my suggestion) a deal with Tom Tom would take this news to the next step, if for no other reason than to get John Cleese to do the Boingo and Gogo commercials.
