Before we discuss customer service standards on our beaches, let us establish the legal ground rules that govern every single commercial transaction in Greece:
- Card acceptance is mandatory: Under current Greek tax legislation, accepting card payments via POS or IRIS is a strict statutory requirement, not an optional amenity.
- Technical failure belongs to the merchant: A malfunctioning, missing, or “signal-less” terminal does not deprive the consumer of their legal right to pay electronically, nor does it entitle the merchant to demand cash.
- Receipts and compliance: Businesses that fail to provide electronic payment options or proper receipts face immediate, heavy administrative fines from tax authorities (AADE).
Now that the legal baseline is clear, we can appreciate the daily technical miracles that occur across our coastlines.
Earlier today at Mononaftis Beach in Agia Pelagia, a Cretan expatriate visiting from Great Britain sat down on a sunbed, fully prepared to transfer €10 to the local operator. When he produced his card, he was met with the familiar refrain: the system was down. He was instructed to march off the sand, locate the nearest ATM, pay a €5 foreign transaction fee to his bank, and return with €15 worth of cash for a €10 chair.
When the guest pointed out the sheer absurdity of paying a 50% surfeit, the operator escalated the situation by demanding he leave the beach immediately or face a call to the police.
Invoking law enforcement because your own business fails to maintain legally mandated payment infrastructure is a fascinating tactical maneuver. If the police do arrive at a beach concession dispute, their duty is to enforce state regulations, which includes verifying whether a business is complying with mandatory payment laws.
The Municipality of Malevizi, which leases Mononaftis Beach to private operators, should perhaps remind its concessionaires how POS machines work. Or, at the very least, how the law works.
