One of the most anticipated astronomical events of the decade is almost here. Tomorrow, August 12, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and the Balearic Islands, briefly turning day into night for millions of observers.
While northwestern mainland Greece (such as Corfu and Ioannina) gets a subtle 0.7%-2.3% sliver of moon-on-sun overlap around 20:33–20:37 EEST, Crete is too far southeast.
The astronomical geometry runs out of daylight and distance:
- Sunset timing: On August 12, sunset across Crete occurs at approximately 20:11 to 20:14 EEST.
- Eclipse alignment: The shadow edge barely touches the far northwestern corner of Greece right around 20:30 to 20:35 EEST.
- By the time the Moon’s penumbral shadow grazes mainland Greece, the sun will have already set across Crete.
If the century’s eclipse is non-negotiable, the geography is clear. The serious pilgrimage is to the path of totality: Iceland for the midday night, or northern Spain—Valencia, Zaragoza, Palma, Bilbao—where the sun will be fully veiled at dinner hour, with Madrid and Barcelona at a hair’s breadth, 99% covered. The modest pilgrimage is to the Ionian: Corfu, or better Othonoi, for Greece’s sole five-percent bite, visible only for a few minutes above the horizon. Wherever you watch the partial phases, certified eclipse glasses are non-negotiable; the sun at 2% eclipsed is as dangerous to the eye as the sun at zero.

While tomorrow’s event passes us by, skywatchers in Crete do not have to wait long for a dramatic event. On August 2, 2027, a major total solar eclipse will sweep across North Africa and the Mediterranean.
During that 2027 eclipse, while the path of totality crosses Egypt and Luxor, Crete will experience a massive partial eclipse, with over 80% to 85% of the sun covered, casting noticeable twilight-like dimming over the island during broad daylight.
