How comfortably can the port handle three major ships at once?
The answer matters beyond the quay.
Thousands of passengers don’t remain on their ships. They need buses, taxis, excursions, guides, restaurants, shops, toilets, pedestrian routes, and access to Chania and the wider region.
A cruise port’s capacity isn’t simply a question of whether three ships can physically tie up.
It’s what happens after 8,150 people walk down the gangway.
The Port Says Upgrades Are Coming
Dimitris Virirakis, president of the Chania Port Fund, said the simultaneous arrival of three large cruise ships demonstrates Souda’s capabilities while also underlining the need to improve its infrastructure.
According to Virirakis, the port authority has been working toward those improvements and is now close to implementation, with government and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs funding supporting the planned projects.
Today’s arrival also provides a useful real-world stress test.
If Souda wants more cruise traffic, particularly simultaneous calls by large vessels, infrastructure needs to be designed around the passengers who arrive with the ships, not just the ships themselves.
Today’s combined total of 8,150 passengers is being described as one of Souda’s busiest cruise days.
It comes close to the port’s daily passenger record, but does not break it. Please remember the distinction.
