Plans to establish a temporary migrant accommodation facility at the former Skouloudis warehouses in Athanatoi are raising concerns about the potential impact on tourism in the Heraklion area.
The proposed site lies along an important tourist road connecting Knossos with Phaistos, Gortyna and major destinations across Messara, putting the issue directly on a route used by visitors exploring southern Crete.
Local tourism representatives have expressed concern that the facility could affect the destination’s image, as well as traffic and tourist movement along the busy route.
They are calling for an alternative location away from major tourist routes, businesses and residential areas.
The issue is expected to be discussed during a meeting with Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris on September 8, as local authorities and tourism representatives seek a different solution.
