The City of Heraklion encourages you to leave your car at home and take a free bike instead. They now have 45 bikes available at two easy pick-up spots. This isn’t just about being green; it’s a way to get people moving and exploring the city.
Pick-up locations and times:
- Jesus Gate: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Karavolas: Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Whether you’re an early riser or prefer the afternoon, there’s a time that works for you. Yannis Tsapakis, the deputy mayor in charge of sports, says this program is about getting people to see the city from a bike and reducing car use. He points out, “It is encouraging to see more and more citizens and visitors to our city trying out the bicycle for their transportation. The friendliest means that can contribute to achieving the sustainability of cities.”
Basically, they want fewer cars taking up space on the streets. Before you grab your bike, remember to bring a valid ID—like a driver’s license, passport, or ID card. If you’re under 16, you’ll need an adult with you, whether it’s a parent or someone who can take on the role of being responsible.
And if you’re curious about options for younger siblings or electric bikes, you’re in luck. Heraklion also has 66 new electric bikes you can rent through the easybike Heraklion app, but you must be at least 18 to use those.
