Tourists and residents facing full buses on the Gouves–Heraklion route during Crete’s busy summer season have prompted an official response from KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi, which says the route is among the busiest intercity connections in Greece during the tourism period.
The company says buses operate every 30, 20 or 15 minutes, particularly during peak hours, to meet increased demand.
According to KTEL, its traffic coordination service monitors passenger demand and can add vehicles to the route when necessary, provided additional buses are operationally available.
The company also directs passengers to its online ticketing system, which allows travelers to secure a seat on a scheduled service in advance, as well as to its mobile application for checking services and planning journeys.
VOAK Traffic Also Affecting Bus Schedules
KTEL says the situation is further complicated by daily traffic congestion on the VOAK, where roadworks and heavy traffic are affecting journey times and the reliability of scheduled services.
The company acknowledged that passengers can be left waiting when a passing bus is already full, particularly during periods of exceptionally high demand.
For visitors staying in Gouves and traveling to Heraklion, the advice is practical: check the schedule and consider booking online in advance, particularly during peak travel periods.
Crete’s summer transport problem is increasingly a numbers game. More visitors mean more people moving between resorts and cities, and on one of the island’s busiest tourist routes, a bus every 15 minutes does not necessarily help if every bus is already full.
