Last week, the residents reported a concerning flea infestation problem in the Mastabas area of Heraklion, specifically at the popular Romantiki Gonia (Romantic Corner) meeting point.
The historic hotspot, traditionally reserved for holding hands and whispering sweet nothings, has transformed into an active combat zone where the primary activity is frantic calf-slapping.
“My partner attempted to read me poetry near the bench, but we spent the entire evening violently swatting at our shins,” said Maria Katsoridou, gesturing to a constellation of red welts. “It added a physical rhythm to the night, though the sheer irritation makes it difficult to focus on our future together.”
The neighborhood consensus points to the local stray population, who allegedly brokered a deal to share the wealth of their parasitic companions with passing humans. The situation escalated when the tiny intruders bypassed residential security, establishing sovereign territories inside local living rooms.
The Municipality of Iraklio has responded to the crisis with its signature administrative speed, assuring citizens that an official inspection will occur once the proper paperwork is filed, lost, found, and stamped in triplicate.
At the time of this article, more than a week after the residents reported the flea infestation, the Municipality has not taken any action. Not a single inspection team has been dispatched, no pest control measures have been implemented, and the suspected stray animal hotspots remain entirely unmanaged. The neighborhood is left to fend for itself, turning a manageable public health issue into a prolonged, frustrating ordeal for the people who actually live there.
What to Do if You’ve Been Bitten by Fleas
- Wash the bites with soap and cool water as soon as possible to reduce irritation and the risk of infection.
- Avoid scratching, as it can break the skin and lead to infection.
- Apply a cold compress for 10–15 minutes to reduce swelling and soothe the itching.

- Monitor the bites over the next few days. Seek medical advice if they become increasingly red, swollen, painful, develop pus, or if you experience a severe allergic reaction, fever, or other unusual symptoms.
