Delta Air Lines has introduced a baggage tracking system that provides a web-based interface for customers to track their checked baggage. If you like doing your travel preparation, planning, and purchasing online, the ability to also track your bags is a nice addition.
Passengers on Delta flights can track their bags using the bag tag numbers assigned to them. When they first check their bags, the airline scans each one, entering it into the system. If the bags are lost, the passengers can check on their status using the file reference number from their “property irregularity report.”
Additionally, SkyMiles members can opt to receive status alerts regarding their checked bags via the Delta.com website. Delta passengers can also visit Delta’s self-service kiosks at select airports to check the status of their bags. Delta even provides online forms to make it easier to report missing bags.
Finally, to make sure they slather that icing on the cake, Delta will provide rebates for any bags delayed longer than 12 hours. To apply for a rebate, go to Delta.com for a “transportation credit voucher rebate” of $25 for one bag or $50 for two.
These baggage improvements that Delta is rolling out come just a day after the U.S. Department of Transportation announced an expansion of airline passenger protections that will require airlines to provide refunds to passengers whose bags are lost.
To get Delta’s notifications for baggage that does not travel with you, visit the airline’s website and sign for Last Minute Updates. The airline will then text or email you if your bags are not on the flight with you. Similarly, to track your bags and find out where they currently are, go to Delta’s Track Checked Baggage page.
