Crete is set for a significant weather shift after several unusually warm October days, with rain arriving late Sunday, October 25, followed by stronger northerly winds and noticeably cooler temperatures from Wednesday.
Meteorologist Manolis Lekkas, speaking to Nea Kriti, forecasts the first weather systems to reach western Crete late Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday. The unsettled conditions are then expected to spread eastward across the island.
For visitors, the message is simple: enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, but don’t pack as if summer has signed a permanent contract with Crete.
Rain Moves From West to East
The weather change is expected to begin late Sunday night, with the first rainfall affecting western parts of Crete.
On Monday, October 26, showers are expected to gradually extend toward the island’s eastern parts, with unsettled conditions continuing into Tuesday.
Different areas may experience the weather at different times, so visitors traveling around Crete should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, particularly on longer road trips.
Strong Northerly Winds Arrive Wednesday
A second change is expected from Wednesday, October 28, when northerly winds are forecast to strengthen significantly.
Colder air will also move into the region, bringing a further drop in temperatures.
Mountainous parts of Crete are expected to see the strongest effects, although rainfall is also possible at lower elevations.
For travelers, stronger northerly winds could affect boat trips, coastal activities, and ferry connections, while drivers in mountainous areas should be prepared for more difficult conditions.
Temperatures Drop to Around 19–20°C
The cooler weather will be a noticeable change from the unusually warm conditions experienced recently.
Maximum temperatures during the colder period are expected to fall to around 19–20°C.
At night, temperatures could drop to around 15°C along the coast, with even lower temperatures expected inland and in mountainous areas.
That means the light jacket you’ve been ignoring in the suitcase may finally earn its keep.
Crete Recently Reached 30.1°C
The coming change follows an exceptionally warm spell for late October.
Crete recorded some of the highest temperatures in Greece, including:
- Voukolies, Chania: 30.1°C
- Falasarna, Chania: 29.6°C
- Vryses, Chania: 29.6°C
- Chania: 29.2°C
- Heraklion: 29.2°C
The contrast with the coming weather will therefore be considerable.
Saturday Still Looks Mostly Sunny
Before the change arrives, Saturday, October 24, is expected to remain mostly pleasant across Crete.
Sunshine should dominate most areas, with generally light southerly winds. Cloud cover may increase, particularly over mountainous areas, where isolated light, brief showers cannot be ruled out.
So if you’re visiting Crete this weekend, Saturday looks like the best day to enjoy the outdoors.
The change is associated with a low-pressure system expected to develop over central Europe and move southeastward.
The system is expected to bring more significant weather to western Greece first, then expand its influence from Monday toward central, eastern, and southern parts of the country.
For Crete, that means a shift from warm, largely settled conditions to a more distinctly autumnal pattern.
