Amazonas Park Crete is a rising trend on Google Android search and for a good reason. On an Island full of natural wonders, a natural wonderland of animals for kids and grownups to enjoy, is a logical magnet for visitors. Located a few minutes from the capital in Heraklion, the park/zoo is a privately funded rescue and conservation center for endangered wildlife.
Opened back in 2011, the park is located near the quaint traditional village of Neopoli. Tourists from Hersonissos, Malia, and Agios Nikolaos will find the park a pleasant half-day excursion from the busy beach oriented centers of the North coast.
The park is also home to many domestic and local animals like donkeys and goats, but the focus of Amazonias Park Crete has always been animals from South America, especially parrots and monkeys.
Visitors can see colorful and exotic birds including parrots, cockatoos, toucans, peacocks, and macaws. There are also butterflies, lizards, tortoises, and lemurs to kids of all ages to interact with. A favorite for most travelers is the feeding of the friendly lemurs and monkeys inside their enclosures.
Amazonas Park Crete also runs a program of breeding for birds and many wild creatures from Brazil and other parts of Latin America and Australia.
The park is open every day from 10.00 to 18.00 and admission is 14€ for adults and 8€ for kids (age 3-12). Smaller children enter for free. For more information, you can call locally to – 2841 031182, or visit the park’s official Facebook pages here.
