The Region of Crete and the Embaro Cultural Association are organizing a folk evening with Βαγγέλης Λύτινας (Vangelis Lytinas) in Embaro (Emparos) on the school square on Wednesday, August 14, at 10 p.m. Entry to the public is free. The village is about 50km from Heraklion near Viannos for those eager to attend.
If you are unfamiliar with this traditional village, Embaro is in the southwestern foothills of Lassithi Plateau. The village sits at an altitude of 430 meters and is surrounded by the densely vegetated valley of the Baritis River. The hamlet of about 100 permanent residents is, for many, a veritable Eden with its orchard and the giant plane, walnut, and polar trees flanking the branch of the river that flows through the center of town.
The town is also famous for the local farmers who grow diktamo, one of Crete’s most valuable native herbs.
Embaros is about 50 km from Heraklion and 15 km from the municipality’s seat, Ano Vianno. It is one of the region’s most beautiful traditional villages. During the Venetian period, Embaro was the largest village in the province of Pediados. By 1583, it had almost 1,000 residents, but the village was listed as far back as 1301 AD.
