A reinforced seawall protecting the coastal road and beach access at Skaleta near Rethymno will receive additional safety upgrades under a €62,885.92 supplementary contract. The work is designed to strengthen the structure against wave action and improve safety for people accessing the beach.
The supplementary contract covers the section from the Ilios tavern east toward the chapel of Agios Nikolaos.
The additional work was approved for technical and safety reasons, including:
- Strengthening the seawall foundation against undermining caused by wave action
- Backfilling the full height of the wall with concrete-filled stone rather than excavated material
- Installing railings along the seawall
- Adding railings to the staircase leading down to the beach
The original construction contract was worth €390,136.41 including VAT and was signed on November 3, 2025.
The new supplementary contract brings additional funding to the project as the municipality addresses safety and structural requirements identified during construction.
The agreement was signed at Rethymno Town Hall by Mayor Giorgis H. Marinakis and the contractor’s representative, Dimitris Koutrakis, with Technical Works Deputy Mayor Angelos Malas and Technical Services Deputy Director Marianna Markoulaki also present.
Construction has been temporarily suspended because of the tourist season.
Work is expected to restart on November 2, 2026, after the summer tourism period.
For visitors, the improvements are particularly relevant because the project involves a coastal road, seawall, and direct access to the beach. The added reinforcement and railings are intended to make the area safer while protecting the road and shoreline infrastructure from the force of the sea.
