One of Chania’s most charming summer events returns on Sunday, August 16, inviting families, visitors, and nature lovers to discover the remarkable wildlife of Stavros through art, science, and hands-on activities.
Held at Pachia Ammos Beach from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the “Sea Turtle Event: Action for the Protection of the Stavros Environment” celebrates the unique coastal environment of Akrotiri while highlighting the importance of protecting the nesting habitat of the Caretta caretta sea turtle.
Pachia Ammos represents the single most critical nesting habitat for endangered Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) on the Akrotiri peninsula. The free, community-led event aims to raise public awareness about protecting fragile sand dune ecosystems, coastal flora, and nearby archaeological sites from heavy tourist degradation.
A Two-Part Evening
The organizers have crafted a schedule that is engaging for both children and adults, seamlessly transitioning from sunset activities to nighttime wonder.
Phase 1: Guardians of the Sand (18:00 – 20:00)
- Young artists: An outdoor exhibition of paintings created by primary school students who recently learned about the local ecosystem through the Ecological Initiative of Chania’s educational programs.
- Hands-on conservation: Attendees will help build and symbolically place wooden informational signs about the local flora, fauna, and archaeological sites of Stavros.
- Turtle time: The renowned sea turtle protection society, ARCHELON, will lead an interactive, floor-based sand game about the turtle’s life cycle, accompanied by face painting for the kids.
Phase 2: Philosophers of the Sky (20:00 – 22:00)
- Ancient stargazing: Members of the Friends of Astronomy Association of Crete will guide visitors through the night sky using telescopes while exploring how the ancient Greek philosophers sought to understand the universe centuries before the invention of modern astronomy. Participants will have the opportunity to observe planets, star clusters, nebulae, and other celestial objects under the Cretan sky.
- Telescope viewing: Attendees can look through professional telescopes to spot planets, star clusters, and nebulae.
- Community bazaar: A small, cozy book and object bazaar will be running throughout the evening to support the cause.
