If you’re planning a road trip, airport transfer, village visit, or excursion today, check your route before you leave. Several roads remain closed, while others are operating with only one lane available.
What travelers need to know
- Lasithi: Sections of the Ierapetra–Sitia road are closed, while another route is operating with one lane.
- Rethymno: The road from Vistagi to Platania in Amari is closed.
- Heraklion: Three Irish crossings remain closed.
- Some roads previously affected in Rethymno have reopened.
- Travelers are being advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and follow instructions from traffic police.
Lasithi: Ierapetra–Sitia Road Affected
In Lasithi, traffic has been completely stopped at two points along the provincial road between Ierapetra and Sitia:
- 15th kilometer, Agia Fotia
- 22nd kilometer, Koutsouras
A separate section at the 28th kilometer of the Agios Nikolaos–Exo Potamoi provincial road is operating with traffic restricted to one direction of travel at a time.
For travelers moving between eastern Crete’s major destinations, these restrictions could mean delays, diversions or the need to reconsider the journey.
Rethymno: Mountain Routes Remain Affected
In Rethymno, the provincial road from Vistagi to Platania in the Municipality of Amari remains closed.
There is some better news: traffic has been restored on the provincial roads from Krana to Zoniana and from Axos to Zoniana.
Conditions in the mountain areas can change quickly during prolonged heavy rainfall, so travelers should not assume that a recently reopened road will remain unaffected throughout the day.
Heraklion: Three Crossings Closed
In the Heraklion regional unit, traffic remains prohibited at three Irish crossings, which can become particularly hazardous when water levels rise:
- Kastorias Street, Katsambas, Municipality of Heraklion
- Lykiou Street, Koroni Magara, Municipality of Heraklion
- Damania toward Melidochori, Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia
Travelers should never attempt to cross a flooded or closed crossing, even if the water appears shallow.
Check Before You Drive
The General Regional Police Directorate of Crete is continuing to monitor the road network and issue updates as conditions develop.
For anyone traveling around the island today, the practical advice is straightforward:
Check road conditions before departure, allow extra time, avoid unnecessary journeys during the worst weather, and follow traffic police instructions and road closures.
