A 17-year-old British girl was taken to Rethymno Hospital after becoming intoxicated at a social event, but for her parents, the evening ended with something considerably more serious than a trip to the emergency department.
They were arrested.
The teenager had been attending the event in Rethymno with her parents. During the evening, she consumed alcohol and subsequently developed symptoms of intoxication, requiring medical attention. After receiving treatment, she was discharged from the hospital.
Police then arrested her parents in connection with the incident.
The Hidden Legal Reality for Tourists in Crete
For visitors from countries where parents may regard a teenager having alcohol at a family or social event as a matter of parental responsibility, the Greek approach can come as a nasty surprise.
Greek authorities have been increasingly enforcing legislation designed to protect minors from alcohol. Parents or guardians can face arrest for neglect of supervision when an intoxicated minor is involved, while businesses or other adults who provide alcohol to minors can also face separate legal consequences.
And this is not an isolated incident on Crete.
Earlier in September, authorities in Chania and Rethymno dealt with several cases involving minors and alcohol, including arrests of parents or guardians.
A Family Holiday Does Not Create an Exception
The Rethymno case is particularly relevant for international visitors because the teenager was with her parents.
This does not mean parents are automatically arrested every time a minor consumes alcohol in Greece. The circumstances and the resulting investigation matter. But it does mean that parents traveling to Crete should not assume that being present with their teenage child makes alcohol consumption legally acceptable.
The safest rule for visitors is remarkably simple: If your child is under 18, don’t let them drink alcohol in Greece.
This includes the family holiday, the restaurant dinner, the village festival, and the evening celebration that seems completely harmless.
Crete may be famous for its wine, raki, and extraordinarily generous hospitality.
Greek law, however, has its own definition of where the hospitality stops.
Don’t Confuse Cretan Hospitality with Getting Drunk
Visitors sometimes see something that can look contradictory: a Cretan man sitting in a village kafeneio in the morning with a small glass of raki and assume that Greeks must have a very relaxed attitude toward alcohol.
The reality is considerably more nuanced.
Raki is deeply embedded in Cretan hospitality and rural life, but traditionally it is not consumed with the aim of becoming intoxicated. A small glass may accompany coffee, food, or conversation, and offering it to a guest is a gesture of welcome. In agricultural communities, it was also part of the social rhythm surrounding long days of work.
So the little glass of raki at 7 in the morning is not quite the same cultural phenomenon as a teenager drinking several shots at a party.
One is a centuries-old hospitality ritual. The other can become a very serious legal matter. And tourists should not confuse the two.
