The Cultural Association of Aposekari invites visitors to explore the area’s archaeological heritage with archaeologist and Heidelberg University professor Diamantis Panagiotopoulos
The Cultural Association of Aposekari “Alexandros Daskalakis” is organizing a guided archaeological excursion on Sunday, September 6, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the archaeological site of Aposekari and the Messara Museum under the guidance of distinguished archaeologist and professor at Heidelberg University, Diamantis Panagiotopoulos.
The morning event combines a visit to the archaeological site with a guided tour of the Messara Museum, beginning at the Aposekari Community Hall, where participants will gather from 8:15 a.m. and enjoy a traditional breakfast offered by the association before setting off.

The program begins with a walk along the path leading to the archaeological site, scheduled for 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. The association recommends comfortable walking shoes, as the route involves a short walk through the landscape before reaching the site.
From 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., Professor Panagiotopoulos will lead a guided tour of the archaeological site of Aposekari, offering participants the opportunity to explore the remains and learn more about the area’s ancient history directly from an archaeologist specializing in the region.
The group will then travel to the Messara Museum, with the transfer scheduled between 10:15 and 10:45 a.m. The morning continues with a guided museum tour from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., again led by Panagiotopoulos.
Participation in the museum visit costs €10 per person, with a reduced price of €5 available for eligible participants.
The Cultural Association describes the event as an opportunity to combine a morning outdoors with a closer look at the archaeological heritage of the Messara, inviting residents and visitors to discover an important part of Crete’s past beyond the island’s better-known archaeological destinations.
The association’s message for the event is simple: “Let’s walk through our past and keep our heritage alive.”
