One of Greece’s most beloved cultural traditions returns this summer as the Ministry of Culture invites the public to experience the country’s archaeological treasures beneath the glow of the August Full Moon.
On Friday, 28 August 2026, 126 archaeological sites, monuments, museums, and historic landmarks across Greece will welcome visitors for an evening of culture, history, and moonlit exploration. Admission will be free, offering a unique opportunity to discover some of the country’s most treasured heritage sites after sunset.
The annual celebration, now in its 27th consecutive year, has become one of the highlights of Greece’s cultural calendar, transforming ancient monuments into atmospheric venues for music, theater, dance, exhibitions, and guided tours.
This year’s program extends beyond the night of the full moon itself, with events also scheduled for 26, 27, 29, and 30 August. Organized under the coordination of the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, the celebrations bring together regional authorities, municipalities, museums, and cultural organizations from across the country.
Of the participating venues, 61 archaeological sites, museums, and monuments will host special cultural events, while 65 additional sites will remain open to visitors free of charge between approximately 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. or midnight, depending on the location.
Whether attending a concert in an ancient theater, exploring a Byzantine monument under the moonlight, or simply strolling through an archaeological site after dark, visitors will experience Greece’s cultural heritage from an entirely different perspective.
For many Greeks and travelers alike, the August Full Moon has become much more than an astronomical event. It is an annual invitation to slow down, look up, and rediscover the country’s history beneath one of the brightest moons of the year.
The Ministry of Culture will publish the complete list of participating sites and events ahead of the celebrations, allowing visitors to plan their own moonlit cultural experience across Greece.
