Early this morning, a wildfire erupted near Kalami Amigdali in Chania, spreading uncontrollably due to high winds.
Later in the day, another fire alarm was raised in Kavros, Apokoronas, close to residential areas. Flames spread through dense vegetation of reed beds aided by strong winds, threatening homes and businesses. A team of 49 firefighters, 14 vehicles, two land operative units, and a firefighting helicopter joined forces, and shortly before 15:00, the fire in Kavros was brought under control. Local authorities dispatched water tankers and heavy machinery to assist, eventually managing to put the fire under control by mid-afternoon.
- Aris Marinakis (Kalami Amigdali Community President): Suggested the fire might have originated from leftover burnt materials following recent work.
- Charalambos Koukianakis (Apokoronas Mayor): Cited difficult terrain and high winds as significant barriers to firefighting efforts, stressing that aerial support was critical.
Despite containment efforts, officials remain on edge. Southern winds in the region are expected to pick up again, heightening the risk of flare-ups. While evacuation wasn’t deemed necessary, authorities did send a warning via the 112 emergency system to keep residents alert when the first wildfire broke out this morning and a second for the Kavros area.
Interestingly, preventative warnings and fire bans had already been issued days before, urging the public to avoid risky activities during this period of high temperatures and dry conditions. Citizens are urged to avoid traveling to the affected areas.
