Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s state railway operator, has unveiled an innovative plan to introduce private compartments (couple cabins) with frosted glass on their Intercity Express (ICE) high-speed trains. These compartments, dubbed ‘knutsch-abteil‘ (‘smooch cabins’) by the German newspaper Bild, are designed to provide travellers with a secluded space for taking private video calls or enjoying intimate moments.
The frosted glass of these cabins not only ensures privacy but also offers a convenient aspect, which Bild highlighted in its coverage. The newspaper even conducted a poll, inviting readers to suggest names for the new seating, with ‘cuddle compartment,’ ‘cuddle chamber,’ and the winning moniker, ‘smooch cabin.’
These cabins are undergoing trials with various passenger types to assess their functionality and reception. The introduction of these private compartments is part of Deutsche Bahn’s efforts to enhance the travel experience for its passengers.
New features of the couple cabins include:
- Frosted glass for privacy
- Two meters wide and 70 centimetres deep
- Secluded space for video calls or intimate moments
- Innovative design on high-speed ICE trains
Furthermore, Deutsche Bahn plans to install scent buttons near doorways and station elevators, releasing soothing fragrances to create a relaxing atmosphere. These enhancements are part of a comprehensive multi-billion euro overhaul of the company’s services, although the exact timeline for their implementation has not been confirmed.
