Crete is facing another round of heavy weather, with flooding, blocked roads, and infrastructure damage reported across several municipalities.
In Hersonissos, the municipality has established a Damage Recording Committee while the severe weather continues. The committee will inspect affected municipal infrastructure, document damage, estimate restoration costs and prepare the technical documentation needed for requests to the relevant ministries.
The work includes on-site inspections, photographs, technical reports and detailed records of affected infrastructure. The municipality says the information will also support requests for emergency status and funding for restoration work.
Malevizi prepares for another round
The Municipality of Malevizi has advised residents and visitors in Agia Pelagia, Lygaria, Made and Palaikastro to limit travel to essential journeys, particularly from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, as further intense weather is expected.
People in the affected areas have also been advised to secure objects that could be carried by floodwater and to avoid parking in locations vulnerable to runoff or flooding.
The municipality is maintaining an increased state of readiness through its Civil Protection services.
Palaikastro and Kokkini Hani affected
Heavy weather has also caused problems around Palaikastro and Kokkini Hani.
In Palaikastro, strong waves have reached far into the beach area, while water has accumulated on roads in Kokkini Hani.
Traffic problems have also been reported on sections and exits of the BOAK, including routes around Hersonissos.
The Municipality of Heraklion has placed its services, personnel, vehicles and machinery on full alert from October 2 through October 5. Equipment has been positioned at key locations for rapid intervention if required.
Irish crossings closed in Heraklion
Several water crossings have already been closed.
The Irish crossings on Lykeiou Street and in Katsambas are closed, as is the Drakouliaris bridge.
Authorities are warning drivers not to attempt crossings where water is flowing strongly or has accumulated.
Mylopotamos remains difficult
The situation is also difficult in Mylopotamos, Rethymno, where heavy rain has brought large quantities of water and debris onto the road network.
In Livadia, a large volume of water has formed a fast-flowing stream.
In Zoniana, firefighters moved two minors from their home to another residence as water levels were rising.
A 112 alert was issued for Mylopotamos at 16:29, advising residents and visitors to limit travel and follow instructions from the authorities.
Chania issues travel warning
Civil Protection authorities have also warned residents in Chania to avoid unnecessary travel from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon as the latest round of severe weather develops.
Across the island, emergency crews and machinery remain on standby for water pumping, debris removal, fallen trees, and other weather-related incidents.
For now, the message is simple: if a road is flooded, blocked, or has water running across it, don’t try to be clever. Find another route. Drive safe.
