- Lasithi Operation: Five firefighters were deployed to Myronikitas to rescue an 83-year-old hunter who slipped and suffered a hip injury in rugged terrain.
- Chania Operation: A separate rescue team was mobilized near the Cave of Agia Sofia in Chania to evacuate an injured 73-year-old female tourist.
- Ambulance Transfer: In both cases, fire crews successfully carried the injured individuals out of inaccessible zones and transferred them to awaiting EKAB ambulances for hospital treatment.
Cretan fire services faced a busy Saturday, responding to two distinct backcountry rescue operations and navigating rugged terrain where standard ambulances could not go.
The Lasithi Hunter Rescue
The first incident unfolded in the remote Myronikitas region of Lasithi, where an 83-year-old local hunter slipped while navigating rocky terrain, sustaining a painful hip injury. Unable to walk out or be reached by conventional emergency vehicles, an appeal was launched for professional rescue support.
Five firefighters used two specialized vehicles to hike into the difficult terrain, secure the injured man, and carry him to a cleared roadside where an EKAB ambulance waited to transport him to the hospital.
Cave of Agia Sofia Incident
Meanwhile, a second rescue mission unfolded in western Crete near the famous Cave of Agia Sofia in Chania. A 73-year-old female tourist suffered an accidental fall while exploring the scenic area. Emergency teams quickly mobilized to the site, safely stabilized and evacuated the visitor, and she received prompt medical attention at a nearby medical facility.
