The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos and the Municipal Port Fund have replaced the old floodlights on the port’s four 35-meter-high towers with modern LED lighting.
The new LED floodlights are intended to improve visibility and safety across the port while also reducing energy consumption and operating costs.
Municipal services carried out the work after a technical study, paying particular attention to the four towers and their individual components because of their considerable height.
Deputy Mayor for Electrical Lighting Giorgos Beloukas coordinated the project in cooperation with the relevant municipal services and the Municipal Port Fund.
The upgrade also comes at a port that plays an important role in Agios Nikolaos’ visitor economy.
Municipal Port Fund president Dimitris Agapitos noted that the port welcomes cruise ships and large numbers of visitors every year, making the safety and functionality of its infrastructure an ongoing priority.
“The Port of Agios Nikolaos is a key piece of infrastructure for the region and welcomes a large number of cruise ships and visitors every year. We are continuing to implement improvements that enhance safety and upgrade the port’s functionality and image.”
For a destination that receives visitors by sea, the port is quite literally part of the front door.
That makes seemingly mundane improvements — lighting, safety systems, energy efficiency and maintenance — part of the visitor experience too.
Replacing old floodlights isn’t particularly glamorous. There is, however, something reassuring about infrastructure that works better, costs less to operate and makes a busy port safer.
