Come celebrate the “Kathari Deftera” at the Karavolas Park in Heraklion on March 2nd. This Greek celebration gives new meaning to the old adage “Go fly a kite.”
The Municipality of Heraklion celebrates the traditional Koulouma (Clean Monday) on March 2nd with authentic Cretan music, free fasting treats, dancing, and the amazing kite flying.
Otherwise known as the Koulouma, the celebrations of the first day of the Eastern Orthodox Christian Lent is all about the consumption of shellfish, taramosalata (fish roe dip), a special kind of azyme bread, baked only on that day, called “lagana”, halvas, and gigandes beans.
The significance of the day is the promise of leaving behind of sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods for the Christian believers.
The events at the Karavolas Park across from Talos Plaza on the sea start at 11:00 and last until 15:00 or later depending. Cretan traditional artists the Dayianta Brothers will be on hand along with other artists and city officials.
