Heraklion’s ancient Venetian Walls are preparing to set the stage for one of the island’s most distinctive late-summer events. The 3rd Festival of the Walls runs from August 31 through September 10, featuring over 35 individual events encompassing music, film, theater, dance, and outdoor visual arts across the city’s historical ramparts.
This year’s edition marks the first held under the official Cultural Development Agreement signed between the Municipality of Heraklion, the Region of Crete, and the Greek Ministry of Culture—a legal framework designed to preserve, highlight, and utilize the Venetian fortifications and historical Shipyards (Neoria).
A Lineup With No Genre Boundaries
The organizers have explicitly stated that this festival has “no walls” when it comes to musical genres. The schedule is a deliberate collision of high art, underground sounds, and deep-rooted tradition:
- The festival kicks off with a spectacular drone light show over the Jesus Bastion, immediately followed by a powerhouse collaboration between Dimitra Galani, Eleni Tsaligopoulou, and the Estoudiantina of Nea Ionia, Volos, at the “Nikos Kazantzakis” Garden Theater. Later, the Greek National Opera brings A Paris tous les deux, a hybrid performance merging cinema and lyrical art.
- The walls will host Konstantinos Vitas interpreting the poetry of Yannis Ritsos, Stavros Lantsias presenting Waving Hands, and Petros Klampanis bringing his internationally acclaimed jazz perspective. Meanwhile, the Vitouri Gate will pulse with electronic beats via the Eclipso Festival.
- Traditional Cretan music will take center stage, but with a twist, engaging in direct musical dialogue with Mediterranean sounds, flamenco, punk rock, and contemporary creation.
- The festival closes with a monumental performance by Nicola Piovani, the Oscar-winning composer behind the iconic score of Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful (La Vita è bella). He returns to Heraklion decades after the “Musical August” of Manos Hadjidakis, presenting his “Journeys of Odysseus.”
