According to data uncovered by Cretalive, Nikos Kazantzakis Airport experienced an unprecedented surge over the August 7–9 weekend, servicing 1,088 flights and moving 181,145 passengers through its terminal gates in just three days.
The influx marks the beginning of the annual Dekapentavgoustos peak, where domestic vacationers, returning islanders, and international tourists converge on the island simultaneously.
International Arrivals Dominate the Tarmac
Of the nearly 90,000 arriving travelers who landed over the weekend, over 89% arrived on direct international flights—translating to 80,180 foreign visitors in 72 hours. Domestic connections brought in another 9,732 passengers.
Averaging more than 360 aircraft movements and 60,000 individual passengers every 24 hours, the terminal operated at virtually 100% operational capacity. Baggage handling, passport control lanes, and taxi queues experienced severe bottlenecks throughout peak afternoon hours.
Ferries Seeing Equal Saturation
The transport pressure isn’t confined to the air. Cretan ferry ports, particularly Heraklion and Souda (Chania), are reporting near 100% vehicle deck and passenger cabin occupancy. Ships arriving from Piraeus and the Cyclades are operating at full capacity as the national summer exodus reaches its absolute peak.
