A tourist excursion boat ran aground on a rocky shoal off Agioi Apostoloi, west of Chania, on Thursday afternoon, prompting a rescue operation by the Hellenic Coast Guard and nearby private vessels.
The vessel, carrying 10 people, reportedly began taking on water after striking the submerged rocks. Coast Guard authorities responded immediately, dispatching a patrol boat while three privately owned vessels also assisted in the operation.
All passengers were safely evacuated from the vessel. Eight tourists were transferred by a passing boat to Chania’s Old Harbour, where they underwent precautionary checks. Authorities reported no injuries.
Investigation Underway
The incident occurred while northerly winds of around 4 Beaufort were blowing in the area.
The Chania Port Authority has launched an investigation to determine what caused the vessel to run aground and is examining all circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials are also monitoring the site for any signs of marine pollution resulting from the water ingress, although no environmental impact had been confirmed at the time of writing.
The damaged vessel remains under the supervision of the competent authorities while efforts continue to secure and recover it safely.
