Crete recorded 238 road traffic accident deaths between 2020 and 2025, according to ELSTAT data cited by Nea Kriti, underscoring the ongoing road-safety risks facing residents and visitors across the island.
The figures come as new videos once again capture dangerous driving on Crete’s roads, including vehicles entering opposing lanes and overtaking in situations where a collision could have had fatal consequences.
For visitors driving rental cars or traveling by road, the figures remind them that Crete’s roads require attention well beyond the main tourist routes.
Heraklion Recorded the Highest Number of Deaths
Heraklion recorded the most road fatalities in the period covered, with 100 deaths.
The figures reported by Nea Kriti break down as follows:
- Heraklion: 100 deaths
- Chania: 66 deaths
- Rethymno: 27 deaths
- Lasithi: 26 deaths
The numbers show road safety isn’t confined to one part of the island. All four regional units recorded fatalities during the period.
Dangerous Overtaking Remains a Problem
The statistics are accompanied by several recent videos showing risky driving behavior.
One recording shows a vehicle traveling into oncoming traffic near the exit of the VOAK, creating the possibility of a head-on collision.
Another video from Rethymno shows a white vehicle remaining in the opposite lane for several seconds while attempting to overtake.
A third recording captures a vehicle suddenly changing direction and moving directly in front of the vehicle filming the incident.
The videos don’t represent every driver on Crete, but they show the kinds of decisions that can turn an ordinary journey into a serious road-safety incident.
What This Means for Visitors
Most tourists driving around Crete will complete their journeys without incident, but visitors should not assume that familiar-looking roads operate like those at home.
Overtaking behavior, sudden lane changes and vehicles approaching at speed can be particularly difficult to anticipate on unfamiliar roads.
Drivers should keep a safe following distance, avoid attempting risky overtaking maneuvers and expect other road users to make unexpected decisions.
For visitors using rental cars, tour buses, or private transfers, allow extra time for journeys rather than risk it to save a few minutes.
