On January 25th the temporary exhibition “The islands of the winds. The nautical culture of the Prehistoric Aegean” will open in the New Archaeology Museum of Mesara in Gortys, Heraklion Prefecture.
The Region of Crete, in conjunction with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion and the Institute of Classical Archaeology of the University of Heidelberg, will inaugurate a temporary exhibition at the new museum. The exhibit, scheduled to run from January 26th through August 31st of 2020 at the Museum of Mesara, will unveil the maritime tradition of the prehistoric Aegean.
The exhibit will open a window into the region’s archaic past via digital and design representations, three-dimensional replicas of ships, ports and port facilities, and artifacts from the Mesara area form Minoan times.
The innovative exhibit at the Archaeological Museum of Mesara takes a practical approach to portray the history of Aegean navigation. This approach has allowed for the first time a series of convincing cases to propose hypothetical answers on a variety of unanswered questions about the techniques of construction, the size, the shape and the navigation of ships of the era.
The exhibit will also reveal the operation of port facilities of the Bronze Age, and extend understanding of these aspects beyond the narrow framework of purely historical themes. The idea is to help the public, and in particular, students, to better understand what early navigation in the Aegean was like. The debut of the exhibit will also feature a series of lectures and guided tours.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on 25 January, at 17.00. ON the same day, at 16.00, a special tour for representatives of the media and officials of the Ministry of Culture will be conducted by Dr. Diamantis Panagiotopoulos.
